What is Study Permit?
A study permit an authorization issued by IRCC to a foreign national that allows him to engage in an academic, professional, or education programs in Canada. Study permit is not a Visa and it doesn’t allow you to enter Canada. If the foreign national require a visa or Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Canada, the officer will issue one to the applicant with the study permit application.
Do I need study permit?

In general, any foreign national who wants to study in Canada must obtain a study permit before coming to Canada. Studying in Canada without study permit is prohibited by the law; however there are some exceptions to this rule. Those exceptions are as follow:

  • If the study program is 6 month or less in duration that will be completed within the visitor visit to Canada.
  • Study permit is not required for family members and members of staff of diplomats or foreign representatives
  • Study permit is not required for members of the armed force of some countries
  • Study permit is not required for native Indian Canadian
  • And study permit is not required for Minors’ children that are:
    • Attending kindergarten
    • Or who are refugees or refugee claimants or whose parents are refugees or refugee claimants
    • Or minors who are already in Canada with parents that is allowed to study or work in Canada, subject that the minors are studying in preschool, primary or secondary education

General eligibility criteria
Study visa falls under Temporary Immigration Programs. This means that all the requirements that applied to the general visitors to Canada apply to the students who want to study in Canada, such as leaving Canada after finishing the study program, showing family and/or financial ties to the country of citizenship or country of resident, having a passport of travel documents, having legal status in his country of resident, not having criminal record or health issues, not being forbidden from entering Canada because of misrepresentation or because of violating any condition of previous stay in Canada (review Visitor visa section for more information).
