Work While Studying

Work for international students

Usually, the study permit will have work condition on it. If your study permit doesn’t have work conditions on it, you can ask to have these conditions added.

Generally, the international student must be able to support himself financially without the need to work in Canada (financial ability is one of the main requirements for the approval of the study permit).

However, if the student wishes to work while studying, he needs to consider some factors before start working. There are some situations where the student must get a work permit in order to work while studying, in other situation there are some restrictions on the number of hours that the student can work, and there are some situations where the student can work without work permit and without any restrictions.

It worth to mention that if the student violate the condition of his study permit or worked without work permit where it is required to have one, he might put himself in a situation where he will be inadmissible and will be asked to leave Canada.

When do I need work permit?

The international student needs to have a work permit before he start working in the following situations:

  • If the student wants to work full time outside school campus during his regular study program. In this case the student needs to apply for open work permit and show that he needs to work and earn money for reasons behind his control.
  • If the student needs to work in order to have work experience which is part of his study program requirements. In this case, he needs to apply for co-op work permit.
