Citizenship refers to the country where a person has met the legal requirements to be a citizen. The vast majority of those living in Canada are Canadian citizens by birth, while others are Canadian citizens by naturalization. Canadian citizenship is associated with certain rights and responsibilities that are not available to non‑Canadian citizens.
Every citizen has the right to enter and remain in Canada, vote in provincial and federal elections, serve as member of parliament, and hold a Canadian passport.
Canada permits multiple citizenship’s, and allow a person who become a citizen of Canada to retain his previous citizenship.

Becoming Canadian Citizen
A person can become Canadian citizen in one of the following ways:
- Citizenship by birth: a person is automatically granted Canadian citizenship if he is born in Canada
- Citizenship by blood: a person is automatically granted Canadian citizenship if one of his parents is a citizen
- Naturalization: is a legal process in which a Canadian permanent resident satisfies the citizenship requirements, apply to become a citizen.
A person born outside Canada is a Canadian citizen if one of his parents is a Canadian citizen the time of his birth. This principle applies only for the first generation of Canadian born outside Canada for a Canadian citizen parents. This means that if a child was born outside Canada to a parent who received his citizenship from a Canadian parent who was also born outside Canada is not a citizen.
