Biometric Requirements for Immigration Applications

Biometric requirements are mandatory for many types of immigration applications to Canada, including applications for temporary residence (such as a study permit, work permit, or visitor visa) and permanent residence (such as through Express Entry, family sponsorship, or the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot).

Biometrics are a way for the Canadian government to accurately identify and verify the identity of applicants by collecting their fingerprints and photograph. The biometric information is stored securely and used for identity verification throughout the immigration process.

If you are required to provide biometrics, you will need to visit a designated biometric collection service point to have your fingerprints and photograph taken. The biometric fee is CAD $85 for individual applicants and up to a maximum of CAD $170 for families applying together.

In some cases, biometric information may be valid for up to 10 years, which means that if you have already provided biometrics in the past, you may not need to provide them again for a new application. However, it is important to check the requirements for your specific application to determine whether biometrics are required and whether your previous biometrics are still valid.

It is important to note that failure to provide biometrics when required can result in delays or even refusal of your application. Therefore, it is recommended to provide biometrics as soon as possible after receiving a biometric instruction letter from IRCC.
