Parents and Grandparents Super Visa

What is the Super Visa?
The super visa was introduced by IRCC on December 1, 2011 to replace the lengthy process for Parent and Grandparents sponsorship program. The super visa is multi entry visa that enables the Parents or Grandparent of Canadian citizen or permanent resident to stay in Canada for a maximum of 5 years at a time without the need to leave Canada or renew the visa.
When to Apply for Super Visa

Apply for super visa if you are the parents or grandparents of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who satisfy the financial requirements (see below), and you need to stay in Canada for a long period of time (generally more than 6 months).

General Eligibility Criteria

Super visa falls under Temporary Immigration Programs. This means that all the requirements that apply to the general visitors to Canada apply to the visitors who want to come under super visa program, such as leaving Canada after finishing their visit, having a passport of travel documents, having legal status in his country of resident, not having criminal record or health issues, not being forbidden from entering Canada because of misrepresentation or because of violating any condition of previous stay in Canada .

Financial Requirements for the Child or the Grandchild in Canada
The child or grandchild in Canada income for the current year must be equal or more than the low income cut-off. The following table shows the minimum necessary income to satisfy this requirement at the time of writing. Note that the income of the spouse of the child or grandchild in Canada can be added to the income of the child or grandchild to meet this requirement. The size of the family unit is the number of family members of the child or grandchild in Canada plus the visiting parents or grandparents.

Medical Exam for the Parents or Grand Parents

The parents or grandparents must undergo a medical exam before coming to Canada. The visa might be refused if the parents or grandparents have medical condition that is:

  • Likely to be danger to public health such as communicable disease ( HIV virus or syphilis or active tuberculosis diseases only)
  • Likely to be danger to public safety such as medical condition that cause unpredictable or violent behaviour.
  • Might cause extensive demand of Canada’s health or social servers ( if the treatment’s cost is more than the excessive demand cost threshold whcih is on avarage of CAD$17,000 per year)
    The applicants can choose to do the exam before submitting the application (in this case it is called up-front medical exam) and submit the proof of the medical exam being conducted with the application, or he can choose to do it after submitting the application and when requested by IRCC.
