Post Graduation Work Permit
A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a type of work permit that allows international students who have completed their studies at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada to work in Canada for up to three years after graduation. The PGWP is an open work permit, which means that it allows the holder to work for any employer in Canada, in any occupation.
To be eligible for a PGWP, international students must meet the following requirements:
1. They must have completed a full-time program of study at a DLI in Canada that is at least eight months long.
2. They must have graduated from a public or private post-secondary institution, or a private secondary institution that operates under the same rules and regulations as public institutions.
3. They must have maintained full-time student status in Canada during their program of study.
4. They must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation from their educational institution that they have met the requirements for completing their program of study.
5. They must have a valid study permit when they apply for the PGWP.
6. They must not have previously been issued a PGWP after completing any other program of study.
The length of the PGWP will depend on the length of the program of study completed by the international student. If the program of study was less than eight months, the student will not be eligible for a PGWP. If the program was between eight months and two years, the student will be eligible for a PGWP that is valid for the same length of time as the program of study. If the program was two years or longer, the student will be eligible for a PGWP that is valid for up to three years.
The PGWP can be a valuable opportunity for international students to gain work experience in Canada after completing their studies, which may be a valuable asset in their future immigration applications.
