What is the Temporary Resident Visa
This visa falls under temporary immigration programs. The holder of this visa can visit Canada multiple times during its validity period (if it is multiple-entry visa) and he can stay in Canada for a maximum of 6 months on each visit. If the visitor wishes to extend his stay for more than 6 month while he is in Canada, he can apply for visitor record to extend his stay for more than 6 months (see visitor record article for more details).
Generally, the holder of this visa is not authorized to work or study in Canada, for this he needs to apply for separate study or work permit.

When to apply for this visa type
Use this visa if you want to visit Canada for a short period of time (6 Months or less) for reasons such as:
- Visiting a family member who is Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident
- Tourist
- Business visit for 6 Months or less, that doesn’t involve employment in Canada or directly entering the Canadian labour market (for example purchasing goods or attending meeting or give or receive training in Canada).
- Other reasons that are temporary in nature
How IRCC assess the application
IRCC officers assess the visit visa application according to the IRPA and IRPR which are the legal frame work for the Canadian immigration system.
The main article which stipulates the criteria for approving a visit visa application can be found in IRPR section 179.
One of the major requirements for this visa is that the applicant will leave Canada at the end of his/her stay, and he/she will not stay in Canada either illegally or otherwise legally by apply for refugee protection for example.
To cover this point, the applicant must show enough ties to his home country or country of residents that convince the officer that the applicant is temporary visitor and will leave Canada when his visa’s condition dictate.
