Work permit is a written authorization issued by IRCC that allows foreign national to engage in work activities in Canada. Work permit is not a visa, and it doesn’t allows its holder to enter and leave Canada. If the foreign national requires a visa or Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Canada, the officer will issue one to the applicant with the work permit application.

Most foreign nationals need  a work permit to work in Canada. There are two types of work permit:

  • Employer specific work permit
  • Open work permit

Employer specific work

Employer specific work permit allows you to work with specific employer in Canada. The work permit may have other conditions such as:

  • Type of work
  • Duration of work
  • And location of the work activities

In most of the cases, the employer needs to have a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment ( unless the worker is LMIA exception workers)

Open Work Permit

Open work permit allows its holder to work for almost any employer ion Canada at any location.

You may be eligible for an open work permit if you:

  • are an international student who graduated from a designated learning institution and are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program
  • are a student who’s no longer able to meet the costs of your studies (destitute student)
  • have an employer-specific work permit and are being abused or at risk of being abused in relation to your job in Canada
  • applied for permanent residence in Canada
  • are a dependent family member of someone who applied for permanent residence
  • are the spouse, common-law partner or dependent child of a low- or high-skilled worker
  • are the spouse or common-law partner of an international student
  • are the spouse or common-law partner of an applicant of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program
  • are a refugee, refugee claimant, protected person or their family member
  • are under an unenforceable removal order
  • are a temporary resident permit holder
  • are a young worker participating in special program
